Cinematic artwork
The featured scene has main character Shirley (Stephanie Cumming) leaning back against a wall to mimic the bored theater usher in New York Movie. Both images express a sense of disinterest or ennui; common motifs in Hopper’s work.
Although it appears to be veritably inscribed in the artistic tradition, the artwork was in fact commissioned by Wes Anderson in 2014. It’s not the work of a Northern Renaissance painter, but rather that of Michael Taylor, a 21st century British artist.
Yet Storaro is clearly fascinated by painting: Writing With Light contains reproductions of over 100 paintings, and one of these, Caravaggio’s The Calling of St. Matthew (1599–1600), helped inspire him to go into cinematography. In Apocalypse Now (arguably his most visually striking film, though it has some stiff competition), he clothes the actors in sickly yellowish light and baleful shadows, producing a chiaroscuro that would have made Caravaggio jealous. For Storaro, as with Caravaggio, the play of light and shadow isn’t just a nifty effect, but a way of suggesting a figure’s state of mind. Apocalypse Now’s Colonel Kurtz straddles madness and civilization, and Storaro’s bold lighting choices render the character’s inner decay visible on-screen.
During the film’s denouement, as the angry mobs crash the gates of Versailles, an image of Napoleon flashes on screen. He is seated on his horse, rearing back in a victorious pose that mirrors the famous painting by Jacques-Louis David. In what may be intended as a momentary erotic fantasy, the infamous Frenchman is portrayed by the actor who also plays Antoinette’s lover in the film (Jamie Dornan).
The significance of this interdisciplinary approach lies in its ability to break down traditional boundaries and foster creativity. By drawing from multiple disciplines, artists can push the limits of their practice and create works that resonate on multiple levels. This fusion of film and painting not only enhances the storytelling potential of visual art but also reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of contemporary culture.

Classic artwork
Though initially criticized for looking unfinished, Monet’s spontaneous technique helped liberate painting from strict academic standards. Impression, Sunrise inspired scores of artists to adopt brighter hues, candid poses, everyday subjects and more textured surfaces —defining features of Impressionism.
Paul Cezanne was a post-impressionist French artist who is famous for some of the most captivating still-life paintings. The Card Players is not one but a series of oil paintings that historians believed the artist chose as a subject because people playing card games were essentially a very common form of still-life. All the versions vary in size, setting, and number of players.
The stories and emotions from history and culture add depth to paintings, turning them into visual narratives that resonate with their times. Artworks connected to historical stories or representing a specific era become well-known, going beyond being on canvas and becoming part of shared memories. The emotions a painting evokes also contribute to its fame, creating connections with viewers and becoming experiences etched into their feelings. Various art styles and trends influence fame, with associated works reflecting popular ideas. The combination of exhibitions, publicity, and market value adds to how well-known a painting becomes, creating a diverse range of art fame.
This fantastical triptych is generally considered a distant forerunner to Surrealism. In truth, it’s the expression of a late medieval artist who believed that God and the Devil, Heaven and Hell were real. Of the three scenes depicted, the left panel shows Christ presenting Eve to Adam, while the right one features the depredations of Hell; less clear is whether the center panel depicts Heaven. In Bosch’s perfervid vision of Hell, an enormous set of ears wielding a phallic knife attacks the damned, while a bird-beaked bug king with a chamber pot for a crown sits on its throne, devouring the doomed before promptly defecating them out again. This riot of symbolism has been largely impervious to interpretation, which may account for its widespread appeal.
Where you can see the painting: It’s at Kunsthaus Zürich. How much is the painting is worth?: While not the same, Mondrian’s “Composition No. III, with Red, Blue, Yellow, and Black” sold for a record-breaking $50.6 million at auction in 2025, setting the highest price ever achieved for a Mondrian painting at the time, according to artnews.com.
